Study Reveals New Hypertension Treatments Are as Good as Old Ones

With the recent developments in medicine and prescription medication, it might sound logical to think that the newer drugs that have been developed in recent years are perhaps more effective than those that have been used for a long time to treat high blood pressure. However, a recent study performed at the New York University Medical Center has provided some data that might finally put the whole debate to rest. This does not necessarily mean that new drugs are not effective when it comes to treating hypertension, but simply that the old treatments are equally effective.

This study took place at the Langone Medical Center and it consisted of over 106 randomized trials that involved more than 200,000 patients and their reactions to newer treatments for high blood pressure as well as the effectiveness of ARB’s (angiotensin receptor blockers) as well as those of enzyme inhibitors. Although enzyme inhibitors have been on the market for well over 10 years, they showed the similar effects and benefits when compared to those of ARB’s, therefore putting into question the belief that ACE inhibitors are far more effective when it comes to treating high blood pressure.

Effective Blood Pressure Medications

Although there has been a very heated debate in recent years in regards to the effectiveness and the safety of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, compared to receptor blockers, this study is expected to put an end to this debate by clearly demonstrating that both methods are equally efficient and it should give physicians the option to prescribe either treatment for hypertension, and while this is a significant discovery in the world of hypertension medication, patients should consider that maintaining healthy blood pressure levels cannot be achieved with prescription medication only, it is extremely important to consider making significant lifestyle changes in order to achieve healthy blood pressure levels.

Alternative Ways to Lower Blood Pressure

Physicians will generally recommend increased levels of physical activity, a diet high in fiber and low in sodium and fats as well as quitting smoking and drinking. If you are currently struggling with your blood pressure, it might be a good idea to consider the benefits that PD120, a natural blood pressure supplement, could bring to your life as it is made from natural compounds that can help maintain healthy blood pressure when combined with other lifestyle changes.

During this study, researchers at the NYU medical center attempted to find a significant difference on the effectiveness of both high blood pressure treatment alternatives but were left completely stumped when the results started pouring in. While previous studies did in fact suggest that older enzyme inhibitors were more effective than angiotensin receptor blockers, it is believed that this difference was caused by the changes in the standard health care practices over the last 10 years as well as the testing methods used in the past and the testing methods used nowadays. However, now that the trials were conducted at the same time and under the same circumstances, it was very clear that both type of drugs were effective in the treatment of high blood pressure.

ARB’s or angiotensin receptor blockers are a type of drug that help modulate the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS), a hormone system that is in charge of regulating blood pressure as well as regulating homeostasis and the natural balance of fluids in the body through the different organs and muscles. ARB’s have been used as a treatment for hypertension amongst patients who are intolerant or allergic to ACE inhibitor therapy. One of the main pharmaceutical differences between ARB’s and ACE’s is the fact that ARB’s do not inhibit the breakdown of bradykinin and therefore do not cause severe, dry coughs or edema; some of the most common side effects of ACE’s. On the other hand, ARB’s tend to have a uricosuric effect in the human body, what this means is that these types of drugs tend to increase the excretion of uric acid in the urine and have been proven to reduce the concentration of uric acid in plasma. Despite the fact that both type of drugs were proven to be effective in the treatment of high blood pressure, it is important to discuss the possible side effects as well as any intolerances or allergies before starting treatment.

As you can see, regardless of what type of drug you choose for high blood pressure, it is always a good idea to consider the help of an all-natural treatment in order to increase your chances of success. Keep in mind that increased levels of physical activity, less stress at work and at home, quitting smoking, quitting drinking and eating a diet low in sodium can effectively increase your chances of success and the effectiveness of any drugs used for high blood pressure treatment.
